The future is now. At this year's World Exposition, Japan is planning to present a veritable army of humanoid robots. They may not look like the boy next door, but they may be more intelligent. And, from playing musical instruments to dancing to helping care for the elderly and disabled, they can do almost anything.

Japan's cleverest robot is named Takeru Sakurai, and he was born human. When the 24-year-old engineering student dons his custom-tailored robot suit, he suddenly acquires supernatural powers. Robots are starting to move into the white collar world. No longer content to work serving drinks or helping kids cross streets, robots are now entering the office as receptionists. Japanese employment agency PeopleStaff has begun offering robotic receptionists to its clients; for $430 a month, you can get a robot Hello Kitty or Ifbot (pictured) to sit at your front desk and greet visitors. We're not quite sure what kind of company would actually want to hire Hello Kitty as a receptionist, but that's almost beside the point. What we really want to know is this: what do you do when your recepto-bot starts bursting into impromptu renditions of "Daisy?"

As if the Bluetooth headphones weren't enough, NHJ is also set to release the VTV-101 wristwatch TV over here. The watch, which is already out in the Far East and the US, and will cost around £200. The PAL version for Europe will pick up all terrestrial analogue stations and will last 2 hours before the batteries need recharging. The screen is 1.5 inches and there's no speakers so you will need to plug in earphones (which also act as the TV aerial). The watch is, as you would expect, pretty chunky, but it's not as bad as some of the previous models they showed us, so we have no doubt that there will be a market of young gadget geeks ready and waiting to get strapped in.
